dxmachina: (Hangover)
Spent the holiday at brother #2's house, which was fun. Ate way too many Christmas cookies and discovered Yeungling Black and Tan. Better yet, he loaned me his hammer drill, so now I can put up some shelf brackets on the concrete walls down in the basement. We also talked about doing the Five Boroughs bike ride in May.

Got lots o'loot, with the emphasis on DVD sets. Got the complete Monty Python's Flying Circus set, the first two seasons of Newsradio, the only season of Crusade, and Buffy season 5, plus a couple of other things that were also on my Amazon wishlist, so I have plenty to watch while I'm home between now and the New Year. Already started in on Newsradio, which still makes me laugh like a loon. I also watched the first several episodes of WKRP in Cincinnati (downloaded from the web) on Christmas Day, so there's been a bit of compare and contrast going on in my mind about the two shows.

Compounded the loot factor by stopping at an outlet mall on the drive home yesterday and buying myself some presents. Picked up three sweaters, a pair of pants, some kitchen stuff, and a B&D Workmate portable workbench. The Workmate was regularly $30, on sale for $15, with another 20% taken off at the register. $12! I also picked up a new wristwatch, a Timex, for $20. I was going to look at somewhat pricier watches because my current watch appears to be on it's last legs. It was one of two Sierra Club watches bought for half price at Lechmere's going out of business sale ten years ago. They weren't super expensive (I paid $75 for each) but they were the most expensive watches I'd ever bought myself, and they didn't even last all that long. The other stopped keeping good time two or three years ago, and the buttons that control the digital chronograph functions on my current watch don't work anymore. I paid the watch hospital $70 about a couple years ago to rehab it, but it didn't help much. Plus the seals are now shot. Last time I washed my hands while wearing it, some of the water got inside. Not good. So rather than spend another $70 to try and rehab it yet again, I figure the Timex will last me almost as long for $20, and when it dies I can just chuck it with no qualms.

Talked to my dad tonight. He's doing a bit better. They have him doing some gentle exercises to rehab the shoulder, but he's still in some pain, and his right arm is useless, which is killing him. As he says, all he does at work anymore is talk on the phone and write, and now he can't write. OTOH, he's stopped wearing the sling, so there is progress. Or orneriness. Meanwhile, the lawn needs for mowing. Brother #2 lives closest, and would normally step in and help, but he's the one who crushed his foot in a motorcycle accident a month ago, and is looking at more surgery, and a six month rehab. When it rains, it pours. Fortunately, brother #1 is currently healthy (raps hand on wooden desk), and has offered to help. I'll probably go down for a visit in a couple weeks. More on that in a bit.

It was a pleasant weekend. The weekend and beyond... )

It has been a very nice week so far, weatherwise, one of those weeks you get occasionally in late January or early February where the sun shines bright, and temperatures stay well above freezing. It's the kind of weather that makes you feel like spring is just around the corner. I've even had the window in my office cracked open. That said, there are still some reminders around that it's winter, mostly the long streaks of snow striping the landscape where the drifts built up during the blizzard, but they have been narrowing.

Sadly, I am reliably informed that spring is still quite a ways off, as a winter storm is bearing down on New England. The weather people say that my neck of the woods is going to get rain for the most part, with only a little snow, but it will still be cold and raw.

The sneakers I ordered Saturday arrived yesterday. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong width, so I have to send them back. I could have completely avoided this if I had actually bothered to take thirty seconds to look at the little size tag on my old pair, rather than make an assumption about what width Bob's Store considers to be "wide." Sometimes I am such a dolt.

The heating system continues to not leak, so go me.

What a lovely day. This morning, looking out my kitchen window at the large patches of lawn visible amidst the remaining drifts while the sun shone on my face, it felt like spring. Yesterday was very much the same. The temperature helped, as it got up into the low fifties. Shirtsleeve weather! Well not really, but I was able to do things like go to the mailbox, replace an exterior light bulb, and haul stuff out to the truck without wearing a jacket. So nice.

The warm temps let me do a couple of repairs that I wouldn't have done if it was colder. The first thing was to replace the weather stripping on the side door so I don't have to keep stuffing athletic socks into the gap between the door and the jamb on cold days. I'd put the old foam stripping on it the first winter I was in the house, and another layer on top of that a couple years later (and that's all on top of the plastic stripping that is part of the door itself), so it all had to be peeled and scraped off. The old stuff was 1/8" thick, so 1/4" thick total. I replaced it with some 3/8" thick stuff. We'll see how wind proof that is. One good sign is that I now have to lean into the door a little to close it properly.

The next warmth related thing I looked at was my heating system. Fluid mechanics for beginners... )

Afterwards I did some straightening up, this time in the living room. I finally took all the Christmas stuff up to the attic, and since I was up there, I hauled a couple boxes of junk down from the attic and out to the truck so I can toss them. There's still a lot to be done up there, but at least I've gotten started.

I also did some online shopping. I've been working on a mix CD of songs about baseball, so I ordered a used copy of the soundtrack from the Ken Burns documentary. And I finally found a place that not only sells my favorite style of sneaker, the super-comfortable Etonic Trans-Am Trainer, but also had my size (12W) in stock. I found them at Bob's Store a few years ago, and loved them, but they eventually wore out. Bob's doesn't seem to carry them anymore, and I hadn't been able to find them elsewhere. I ordered them from shoeseeker.com, which I'd never heard of before, but it turns out the site is owned by the wife of the CEO of Etonic. Bookmarked!
