Ah, Schadenfreude, my old friend. Wouldn't you just love to have been witness to the conversation between Jerry Falwell and St. Peter at the pearly gates today?

Meanwhile, how bad is it when Alberto Gonzales can actually make me feel some respect for John Ashcroft?

---
It was windy again today, but nowhere near as bad as predicted, and not gusty, so I went for a ride. There were occasional swarms of bugs enjoying the return of humidity, but I managed not to swallow any of them, so I consider it a win.

The schadenfreude just keeps rolling along...stephl just posted the news that Fred Phelps's band of lunatics is gearing up to protest Falwell's funeral on the grounds that he was a gay-and-Jew-and-Papist-loving corpulent false prophet, i.e., pretty hateful but not hateful enough to meet Fred's exacting standards.

I keep thinking about an essay Philip Roth wrote (I think during the Reagan years) complaining that the US is becoming an unlivable place for a practicing satirist, because no matter what you come up with reality keeps trumping you.

Also, yay no bug-eating! That was always a major hazard for my sibs and me in our adolescent bike-riding summers all over the hills of the East Bay. Bugs and dust.

Heh, I must've missed that memo. I know Falwell was very much pro-Israel, but he openly blamed gays for 9/11, and I saw a piece of video yesterday of him asserting that the anti-Christ would be an Italian Catholic. Phelps is like the ultimate troll, isn't he? No matter how extreme someone's position is, he just can't not butt into the conversation to be even more extreme.

Ah, but he didn't say anything about the anti-Christ being a Polish or German or French or African Catholic, did he? Which, by Phelps's logic (if such a word can be applied to the dark processes within his brain) proves that he didn't hate Catholicism nearly enough.

Ditto all the other hated groups -- Falwell talked a good hate game, but then if you went and introduced him to a relatively meek and unoffending member of one of those groups at a luncheon or a press conference or whatnot, he'd go and be at least minimally polite instead of bashing the sinner's head in with a hardbound Bible (in a Phelps-approved edition of a Phelps-approved translation, of course). Clearly a big ol' hypocrite.

Phelps is the troll the other trolls cross the street to avoid.
