It is a miserable day outside, all rainy and cold. I have my little cube heater going in my office at work. The first thing I did when I woke up this morning was check to see if the Dodgers and Braves ever finished their game last night (when I went to sleep the game was in a rain delay with LA up 4-1 in the second, and Vin Scully wasn't to hopeful), and was gratified to see that the boys in blue had gone on to a 5-4 win. Then I started looking at the results from other games. When I came to the Yankees-A's box, I was stopped dead in my tracks by something that just didn't make a lick of sense to me. Who the frell is Scott Proctor, and why the frell was he pitching with the game on the line in the bottom of the ninth instead of Mariano Rivera? Apparently, I wasn't the only one for whom those questions came to mind, as both Catfish Stew and Bronx Banter demonstrate, and discuss far more lucidly than I can. I will note that Joe Torre should just remember that (at least for the Yanks), the answer to the question of life, the universe, and who should pitch in the ninth is always 42, which happens to be Rivera's number. Scott Proctor wears #43.

I was mighty happy to see Proctor come in!

Apparently Torre's rule is always: Rivera doesn't come in during a tie game on the road. Why? I dunno. Conversely, Macha ran out our set-up guy in the sixth to get key outs, and Duke whiffed A-Rod with a 79 mph changeup.

Nomar's on the DL. This is not a surprise to anybody, I'm sure, yet I'm happily living in my denial land about when Frank Thomas is nursing a broken foot.

I checked out the other blogs, which had some interesting comments.

Harden sure caught everybody's attention by striking out Sheffield, A-Rod and Giambi in a row.

Interesting that they questioned why Macha didn't pinch hit Antonio Perez for Scutaro. As every A's fan vividly knows, Scutaro has 7 walk-off game winners in three years of part-time play.

I get the impression that Scutaro is not beloved by the statheads, who don't believe in clutchiness, whereas they adore Perez (or at least the Dodger statheads do).
