The truly aggravating thing about Derek Lowe is that occasionally he throws a brilliant game, such that you wonder why he can't do it more often. Yesterday he threw a one-hitter to beat the Cubs, 7-0. The only hit was a little nubber by the first hitter of the game, a swinging bunt that took a funny hop in front of the charging Mike Edwards. Lowe promptly removed that runner from the base paths when the following batter hit into a double play. Only two other Cubs reached base. It was a dominating performance, a game score of 90, the best pitched game by a Dodger this year.

It's hard to reconcile that with the guy who keeps throwing gopher ball after gopher ball. Clearly the talent is there. He is Nuke Laloosh, the man with a million dollar arm and a five cent head. In the third, with the score already 7-0, and with Lowe 3-1 on Corey Patterson after having walked the previous man, Jim Tracy yelled at Edwards, the rookie third baseman, to have him "remind" Lowe to just throw it over the plate. The Dodger announcers said Edwards looked hesitant at first to interrupt the veteran pitcher, but in the end he did, and Lowe came back to strike out Patterson. Don't think, Meat. It can only hurt the ballclub....

It's a pleasant, breezy, sunny day out. I'm watching a bulldozer level the ground on what is to become our new parking lot.

Yup, this statement sums up Derek Lowe quite nicely. During the post season last year I think much of Red Sox nation was thinking, "why couldn't you have pitched like this all season?".

I January, I said in this space, Welcome to the Derek Lowe Face era. Now at least you have seen his good side too.

I swear, he's got brains made of cornflakes. Everybody wondered how he'd do, out of the influence of his 8-year batterymate. The answer? He is no more nor less of a flake with everybody else.
