There is a moment in every boy's life when he discovers a couple of awful truths: anticipation is often better than having, and advertising copy isn't always totally truthful. For Ralphie Parker it was when he found out that the mysterious secret message he was now able to decode with his Little Orphan Annie Secret Decoder Ring was an advertisement for Ovaltine. For me, it was the Christmas I got my Digi-Comp 1.

My usual night time routine is pretty simple. Go to the kitchen, get a Niaspan caplet, walk into the bathroom, take caplet with water, do the rest of the routine. Tonight, as I started down the hall from the kitchen with the caplet in hand, I stubbed my toe, which hurt like hell. In anger, I smacked the wall with my fist. The caplet popped out of my hand like a watermelon seed, then described a long, lazy arc that went through the door into the bathroom, and ended dead center in the toilet, ten feet away. Nothing but the bottom of the net.

Now my toe hurts, my hand hurts, and I'm out a buck for the pill. Plus, I still have a headache from Sunday.
